In the month of karkkidam, reciting Ramayana is an age old tradition in the homes of Kerala. This month is essentially a spiritual month and Ramayanam is read all over the place in temples, benevolent homes by Bhajan groups and spiritual groupings.
The version of Ramayana to be read is the "Adhyathma Ramayana" which is the malayalam ramayama composed by "Thunchath Ezhuthachan" who lived in 16th Century in distict of Malappuram. Being a man of lower caste, but spiritually endowed by birth, he suffered at the hands of upper class Nampoothiris, but yet kept himself in spiritual fold to create the masterpiece that is read by all keralites. Unlike the modern reactionists, he did not convert nor did he take up arms to be a Naxal :), instead surrendered unconditionally in the greatness of RAMA (God) and created many masterpieces including harinama keerthanam.
